Madonna appeared to take a subtle jab at Lady Gaga on Monday in response to a video that is making the rounds online.
Someone edited together clips of Gaga on her A Star Is Born press tour repeatedly telling reporters: "There can be 100 people in a room and 99 of them don’t believe in you, but all it takes is one and it just changes your whole life.”
In an Instagram story, Madonna shared a throwback clip in which she told an interviewer: “If there are 100 people in a room and 99 say they liked it, I only remember the one person who didn’t.”
While the sentiment certainly wasn’t coined by Madonna, some of her loyal fans have suggested Gaga, 32, is trolling the 60-year-old pop icon.
Madonna also posted a photo on Instagram with the caption: “Don’t F*^k with me Monday” followed by a video post and the message: “I heard it all before … talk I cheap. If you can’t improve the silence … say nothing. #sorrynotsorry
It’s not the first time Madonna has accused Gaga of borrowing from her.
“The only time I ever criticized Lady Gaga was when I felt like she blatantly ripped off one of my songs,” she told Rolling Stone in a 2015 interview. “It’s got nothing to do with ‘she’s taking my crown’ or ‘she’s in some space of mine.’ She has her thing. I do think she’s a very talented singer and songwriter. It was just that one issue.”
Madonna was referring to Gaga’s 2011 hit “Born This Way,” which many people compared to Madonna’s 1989 single “Express Yourself.”
In response, Madonna called Gaga “reductive” in an interview with ABC News. When interviewer Cynthia McFadden asked “Is that good?,” Madonna replied: “Look it up.”
Gaga played down comparisons in a 2016 interview with Beats 1 Radio. “Madonna and I are very different,” she said. “I wouldn’t make that comparison at all and I don’t mean to disrespect Madonna, she’s a nice lady, and she’s had a fantastic huge career, biggest pop star of all time. But I play a lot of instruments. I write all my own music. I spend hours a day in the studio. I’m a producer. I’m a writer. What I do is different.”
In her 2017 documentary Five Foot Two, Gaga said she admired Madonna – “no matter what she might think of me.”
