Dolly Parton has been Miley Cyrus's godmother for nearly 32 years, but only recently did she learn that the two of them are actually blood related.
Parton learned of the kinship during an interview with Access Hollywood, which used genealogy company Ancestry to determine that the two stars are seventh cousins, once removed, through John Brickey, who is Parton's sixth great-grandfather and Cyrus' seventh great-grandfather.
Upon learning of the connection, Parton exclaimed, “Is that true? That’s amazing! I’m sure she'll get a kick out of that, but it doesn’t surprise me because she does feel like family.”
According to Ancestry, John Brickey was born in 1740 in the state of Virginia, and eventually relocated to Blount County, Tennessee, where remained with his wife and children until his death in 1806.
Parton revealed she was Cyrus's godmother to ABC News back in 2009, saying, "I'm her honorary godmother. I've known her since she was a baby. Her father's a friend of mine, and when she was born, he said, 'You just have to be her godmother,' and I said, 'I accept.' We never did do a big ceremony, but I'm so proud of her, love her and she's just like one of my own."
Both Parton and Cyrus are natives of Tennessee, and have collaborated on a number of projects including episodes of Hannah Montana, Dolly Parton's Mountain Magic Christmas special, and songs such as Miley's "Rainbowland" and Dolly's "Christmas Is."
