Dolly Parton’s classic 1980 film 9 To 5 may be getting a remake, according to a recent interview with the country star.
The original film featured a trio of secretaries, played by Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, who set out for revenge on their sexist boss, played by Dabney Coleman, and was the first of its kind to highlight sexual harassment of women in the workplace.
In the era of the #MeToo movement and the fight for equal pay for women, Parton said in an interview with Deadline she believes it’s the perfect time for a remake.
"We decided that we are going to do another one," she said. "We are trying to get the script and all that. Everyone is very interested, and we've all agreed that we'd love to do it if it's right.”
According to the Deadline, 20th Century Fox is in the early stages of creating a rework of the film, which will reportedly feature “three young women dealing with sexism and chauvinism in the workplace, who turn to the original trio for help in navigating and getting even with the course male higher-ups.”
The original 9 To 5 was a box office success and Parton’s titular theme song went on to become one of the highest-selling records of the decade.
Parton also turned 9 To 5 into a Broadway musical in 2009.
