A rep for Graham King, one of the producers behind Bohemian Rhapsody, has said reports that a sequel to the Queen biopic is in the works are untrue.
So, what’s up with all those headlines like “Bohemian Rhapsody Movie Sequel Being Discussed” (ScreenRant) and “Bohemian Rhapsody Sequel shock: ‘It’s being discussed’ says Queen music video director” (Express)?
It all started when someone with absolutely no connection to Bohemian Rhapsody expressed an opinion.
On Monday, Page Six quoted Rudi Dolezal – who is working on a book and documentary film about Freddie Mercury – talking about former Queen manager (and one of the producers of Bohemian Rhapsody) Jim Beach.
“I’m sure he plans a sequel that starts with Live Aid,” Dolezal speculated. Page Six reported that he also said something about a sequel being “heavily discussed in the Queen family.”
Dolezal’s guess sparked headlines around the world.
“It looks like there might be a Bohemian Rhapsody sequel,” declared NME. Consequence of Sound announced: “A sequel to Bohemian Rhapsody is in the works.” The UK’s Metro reported: “Bohemian Rhapsody sequel that picks up after Live Aid gig ‘on the table.’”
It’s not crazy to guess that there would be talk of a follow-up to Bohemian Rhapsody given that the film has grossed $876 million U.S. so far at the box office and earned Rami Malek an Oscar for his portrayal of Mercury.
It is, however, crazy to publish “news” stories based solely on the opinion of a man with nothing more than a decades-old connection to Queen.
