Drake has been named the year’s top artist by Billboard.
The music industry publication said the Toronto superstar is the first Canadian artist since Alanis Morissette in 1996 to hold the title and only the third rapper ever, after 50 Cent and Nelly.
This year’s Top Artists list was compiled using chart data from Dec. 2, 2017 to Nov. 17, 2018 – a period where Drake held court with his album Scorpion and its smash single “God’s Plan.”
Post Malone, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift and Cardi B make up the rest of the Top 5.
Drake’s fellow Canadians made the cut. The Weeknd ranked No. 23 and Shawn Mendes came in at No. 30. Surprisingly, Céline Dion is No. 96.
The rapper holds five spots on Billboard’s year-end singles chart, including No. 1. On the albums chart, his Scorpion is second only to Taylor Swift’s reputation. Drake’s More Life is at No. 33, Views is at No. 47 and Take Care is No. 58.
The Weeknd’s My Dear Melancholy and Starboy ranked No. 48 and No. 49 respectively for the year, while Beauty Behind the Madness is No. 86. Mendes’ self-titled album earned the No. 55 spot while Illuminate was ranked No. 98.
The Top Artist list shows how rap dominated music in 2018 – but it also highlights the success of female artists. The Top 40 includes Camila Cabello, Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Halsey, P!nk, Nicki Minaj, Demi Lovato, Ella Mai, and Bebe Rexha.
