Drake has revealed he plans to take up to a year off from music to focus on making films – and there could come a time when he gives up music completely.
“I'm sure I'll stop one day," Drake told The Hollywood Reporter. “When it starts to feel like I'm making it up. Hopefully I'll catch it before I ever get there, right?
“But right now it feels like we just started, so I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. But I do plan on expanding — to take six months or a year to myself and do some great films.”
The Toronto rap superstar just announced he’s teaming up with LeBron James’ company and Netflix to bring back the British series Top Boy in 2019. He has also partnered with Steve Golin of Anonymous Content, the production company behind the Oscar-winning Ontario-shot Spotlight, for a TV series.
THR reported that Drake also has deals in place to create content for film studio A24 and for Apple.
Drake, who starred on the Canadian drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation, said he receives at least one script a week — offering him everything from headlining a Barbershop reboot to playing a superhero sidekick.
“We're not looking to drop him into some Battleship," said Drake’s longtime manager Adel Nur, in what seems like a shot at Drake’s crush Rihanna.
Drake told THR he’s anxious to act again.
“Being a young black guy, I think there's definitely the chance to get typecast,” he explained. “But I also have been pretty adamant about showing range. I try to show it through different outlets, like Saturday Night Live, showing people that I can be funny.
“When I get back into acting, I want to do things that make people go, 'Wow, I didn't expect that.’”
