Drake has revealed that his “beautiful” son Adonis has “crazy blue eyes” and, at just a year old, is “already in the pool shooting the basketball.”
The Toronto rap star opened up about being a dad on an episode of LeBron James’ The Shop that aired on Friday.
It’s the first time he’s talked publicly about his son with ex-girlfriend Sophie Brussaux, although he rapped about Adonis on his album Scorpion (“I wasn’t hiding my kid from the world / I was hiding the world from my kid”).
Drake said he’s “really excited to be a great father.”
He added: “I am a single father learning to communicate with a woman who, you know, we’ve had our moments,” Drake said. “I do want to be able to explain to my son what happened. But I don’t have any desire for him to like, not love his mother, or I don’t ever want the world to be angry at his mother. We have found ourselves in a situation, and we are both equally responsible.”
The rapper said he has unconditional love for Brussaux because he wants Adonis “to love his mother and I have to project that energy.”
Drake admitted he had one regret. “My mom has had real relationships with women in my life over the course of my years that I’m sure she would expect or be elated if I were to have gotten one of those women pregnant,” he said. “It was tough for me to tell her that it was somebody that she never met.”
Drake’s parents Dennis and Sandy split when he was a young child and he was raised by his mother in Toronto.
“I was really hard on my parents for giving me sort of a childhood that I had to wrap my mind around as I grew,” he said. “Multiple times I sort of suggested that they could have done a better job at co-parenting, sticking together, not being so divided.”
But, Drake said he is grateful for “all of the things I’ve learned from and through my father and the incredible things I’ve learned through my mother about patience, about unconditional love.”
