Drake has pulled off a sales feat with the release of his playlist More Life. The playlist has sold over 505,000 copies, when streaming numbers are taken into account. Of that number, 230,000 are “pure” album sales (i.e. not including streaming numbers) according to Hits Daily Double.
By contrast, Ed Sheeran’s Divide shifted 322,000 copies in its first week according to Nielsen. One album sale equates to 1,500 streams, so it’s certainly one area where Drake excels.
More Life came out Saturday (Mar. 18) and featured artists like Jorja Smith, 2Chainz, Young Thug, PARTYNEXTDOOR and Kanye West. Pitchfork named “Passionfruit” as this week’s Best New Track, saying the song is “easily consumed and endlessly repeatable – intoxicating, like a frozen margarita of a certain Canadian flavour.”
More Life also smashed the record for most single day album streams, amassing 89.9 million streams on Apple Music and 61.3 million on Spotify in its first 24 hours (again, besting Sheeran’s same-day streaming record).
To top it off, a physical version of More Life is reportedly going to hit shelves Mar. 31, likely boosting the Toronto hip hop titan’s already staggering sales.
