Toronto celebrated its Grammy winners – including Drake and Daniel Caesar – on Monday night by turning a pair of tourist attractions gold.
The CN Tower and the “Toronto” sign in front of City Hall were lit up in gold after Drake suggested his hometown do something to recognize his win Sunday night for Best Rap Song.
"I wanna say that the mayor of Toronto needs to turn the CN Tower chrome and gold tomorrow,” he told a reporter backstage. “Are you stupid, are you dumb?”
Mayor John Tory doesn’t control the lighting on the privately-owned CN Tower but tweeted: “Hey Drake, congrats on the Grammys win! The Toronto sign will be gold tonight to celebrate.”
On Monday afternoon, a tweet from the CN Tower account read: “Tonight we’re going gold to celebrate the outstanding artists whose work makes Canada shine so brightly on the world stage. Congratulations to the nominees and winners at the 2019 Grammys!”
Drake took note of what Toronto did. “I was talking last night as if I don’t have these on control using the hue lighting app…,” he joked on Instagram. “Nah for real I love my city and this is my real sign of love and recognition thank you to the waviest mayor John Tory!”
Drake and his “God’s Plan” collaborators, Toronto natives Noah Shebib and Matthew Samuels (aka Boi-1da), won Best Rap Song. Daniel Caesar won Best R&B Performance for being featured on the H.E.R. song “Best Part.”
