Are you ready to love Ed Sheeran even more?
The singer’s voice was the last Triona Priestly heard before she died in 2014 after a long battle with cystic fibrosis.
Last week, Priestly’s brother Aiden shared the moment Sheeran sang to his terminally ill sister, who was 15.
“We were in this small little ICU room. Triona in this huge bed covered in tubes and machines," Aiden recalled during an appearance on Ireland’s The Ray D’Arcy Show.
“My brother left the room but he returned and said, ‘I’m just going to put you on loud speaker,’ and he clicks it, then we hear Ed Sheeran comes on and saying, ‘Hi Triona. I hear you’re a big fan.’”
Aiden recounted how Sheeran spoke to Triona and told her that he knew “Little Bird” was her favourite song. “He begins to play and he plays the whole song, he plays all the way through, and then some more,” said Aiden.
“Then we hang up on him – probably a bit rude at the time – the doctor lifts the stethoscope to tell us her heart had stopped.”
Aiden said the family removed Triona’s oxygen mask and “in that moment, I remember, a burst of light comes from the window and she’s smiling.”
Sheeran, who had heard about the young fan’s illness through a social media campaign, later tweeted about her death.
