We don't yet know who will headline this year's Super Bowl halftime show in February, but we do know one artist who won't be putting on the show. Well, two, if you believe the rumours that Lizzo has been dropped from the list of potentials. Ed Sheeran has admitted that he won't be raising his hand any time soon.
Appearing on Andy Cohen’s Deep & Shallow SiriusXM podcast, the English singer-songwriter said he doesn't see himself as the right type of artist to perform on one of the world's biggest stage.
“I think it’s an American thing,” he explained to Cohen. “I think I, I don’t have pizazz… I don’t, you watch Prince, you watch Michael Jackson, you watch Katy Perry, you watch Lady Gaga, you watch Rihanna, you watch Beyoncé. Like all of these amazing performers. I’m just not that, I’m not gonna have dancers on stage. I'm not going to have fireworks on stage. Like the Weekend. I just can't... That's not me."
"I don't think anyone wants to see me do the Super Bowl," he added.
Sheeran said there might one an exception: if he could perform along with a headliner. "I think the only way I would do it is if I was joining someone else," he admitted.
Sheeran's pal Taylor Swift is probably the bookie's favourite to win the honours, and they could perform a few different songs together: "End Game"? "Everything Has Changed"? "The Joker & The Queen"? "Run (Taylor's Version)"? Unfortunately the Eras Tour has some early February dates in Japan, which might complicate matters.
But Ed Sheeran did perform a concert in Tampa, Florida to kick off the 2021 NFL season, so who knows?
