Ed Sheeran has settled a copyright dispute over his song “Photograph.”
Sheeran was sued last year by songwriters Thomas Leonard and Martin Harrington, who alleged his 2015 hit was similar to their song “Amazing.”
Terms of the settlement, which will be enforced by a U.S. federal court in California, are confidential.
“Amazing” was recorded in 2012 by UK X Factor winner Matt Cardle, who distanced himself from the lawsuit. “I think Ed Sheeran is a genius and 100 per cent deserves all his success,” he shared on social media last year.
In 2014, singer Sam Smith settled a lawsuit over similarities between his hit “Stay With Me” and the 1989 song “I Won’t Back Down” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Petty and co-writer Jeff Lynne of ELO are now credited on “Stay With Me” and receive royalties.
