Ed Sheeran is speaking out about the use of one of his early songs in an anti-abortion campaign.
“Small Bump” was reportedly played by activists campaigning in Dublin ahead of Ireland’s referendum on abortion this week.
“I've been informed that my song 'Small Bump' is being used to promote the Pro-Life campaign,” Sheeran wrote in an Instagram Story, “and I feel it's important to let you know I have not given approval for this use, and it does not reflect what the song is about.”
The song from his 2011 debut + includes the lyrics: “‘Cause you were just a small bump unborn for four months then torn from life / Maybe you were needed up there but we're still unaware as why.”
Sheeran told Interview in 2011 that the song was written about a friend's experience of losing a baby during pregnancy.
"It was quite a difficult subject to tackle," he explained. "I wrote it from their perspective. It was my perspective looking on them to begin with. It’s quite a touchy subject, so I wrote it from the perspective of actually being the parent."
