Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder clearly had his late friend Chris Cornell and the victims of the Manchester terror attack on his mind as he kicked off a solo tour on Saturday night.
Performing in Amsterdam, Vedder paid tribute to Cornell in subtle ways. He reportedly opened the show with 2000’s “Long Road” and changed the lyrics to: “Without you, something is missing.”
During 1996’s “Sometimes,” the singer reportedly shouted: ‘Where were you, dear God?”
Vedder was a friend of the Soundgarden singer who died May 17 in Detroit, and he collaborated with Cornell on the latter’s Temple of the Dog project in the early ‘90s.
At the Amsterdam gig, Vedder also seemed to reference the Manchester bombing after someone in the crowd yelled out “I love you!”
Vedder replied: “Thank you. I need it — we all need it. I’m thinking of a lot of people tonight. And some in particular and their families.
“And I just know that healing takes time, if it ever happens. It takes time, and that means you have to start somewhere. So let it be music. Let it be love and togetherness.”
Vedder will play shows in London on June 6 and 7.
