Elton John has opened up about his unlikely friendship with Eminem.

Appearing on The Graham Norton Show, the openly gay piano man recalled performing at the 2001 Grammy Awards with the rap superstar.

“He was accused of being homophobic by so many people because of his lyrics,” John said, "which I thought was nonsense.

“I came out and supported the fact that he isn’t.”

On the Grammys show, John performed Dido’s parts on Eminem’s hit “Stan.” The collaboration did a lot to change perceptions of the rapper – and sparked an enduring friendship.

“We became friends. We’ve been amazing friends ever since,” said John. “He’s an amazing guy … I just adore him.”

John then revealed the gift Eminem sent on the occasion of the “Rocket Man” singer’s civil partnership with Canadian David Furnish in 2005.

“I got this package from Eminem… and it shows you how homophobic he isn’t.” recalled John. “We had two diamond-encrusted c**k rings on velvet cushions.”

He added: “I have to say they have remained unused.”
