Elton John took to Twitter on Monday to share news about the death of his mother Sheila Farebrother at 92.
"So sad to say that my mother passed away this morning," the 70-year-old tweeted. "I only saw her last Monday and I am in shock. Travel safe Mum. Thank you for everything. I will miss you so much. Love, Elton"
John and his mother were estranged for close to a decade, reportedly over his relationship with Toronto native David Furnish. According to The Daily Mail, the singer once said: "I don’t miss her. When she says things in the press, like, 'I haven’t spoken to Elton since he married that f**king a****le David Furnish.' That was pretty hard to take.
"I don’t hate my mother. I look after her but I don’t want her in my life."
In May, though, John tweeted an old photo of the two and captioned it: "So happy we are back in touch. Love, Elton."
John's mother and father divorced when he was 14 and she went on to marry Fred Farebrother.
The piano man performed in Barcelona on Sunday night and has concerts scheduled through December. So far there have been no cancellations announced.
