Elton John earned an Academy Award nomination on Monday morning for “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman.
It is the 72-year-old’s fourth Oscar nomination for Best Original Song and the first he shares with longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin.
John was previously nominated, with Tim Rice, in 1995 for “Circle of Life,” “Hakuna Matata” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King – with the latter winning the Oscar.
“(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again,” which plays over the closing credits of Rocketman, won Best Original Song at the Golden Globes last week. The movie and its star Taron Egerton were shut out of the Oscar nominations.
The track is up again “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” (Toy Story 4) by Randy Newman, “I’m Standing With You” (Breakthrough) by Diane Warren, “Into the Unknown” (Frozen II) by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, and “Stand Up” (Harriet) by Joshua Brian Campbell and Cynthia Erivo.
Snubbed by the Oscars was the Cats track "Beautiful Ghosts" by Taylor Swift and Andrew Lloyd Weber as well as Beyoncé's contributions to the new The Lion King.
In acting categories, Jennifer Lopez failed to get a nom for her role in Hustlers but Renée Zelwegger earned one for portraying music icon Judy Garland in Judy.
Joker, Little Women, Marriage Story, 1917 and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker are vying for Best Original Score.
The Academy Awards will be handed out on Feb. 9 and broadcast on CTV.
