Eminem came under fire this weekend for using what sounded like gunshots during his performance at a music festival in Tennessee.
Some fans reacted to the loud pops during “Kill You” by screaming or ducking for cover.
On social media, they slammed Eminem for not being sensitive to concert-goers still on edge following mass shootings like the one at the Route 91 festival in Las Vegas last year.
"It was EXTREMELY irresponsible and distasteful to end songs w the shot gun sound effect," Andrea Russett tweeted. "I have grown up loving eminem and his music but i was extremely triggered to the point of tears.”
Bella Lowery tweeted: “Honestly, f**k Eminem. Added gunshots to his set. Had to leave. So disgusting and distasteful. Shame on you.”
Other fans, though, pointed out that the sound effects at the end of “Kill You” – from Eminem’s 2000 album The Marshall Mathers LP – are nothing new.
"It sounds to me like a bunch of people became Eminem fans post 2002,” tweeted Trill Walton.
A rep for the rapper later issued a statement insisting there were no gunshot sound effects. “The effect used by Eminem in his set at Bonnaroo was a pyrotechnic concussion which creates a loud boom. He has used this effects – as have hundreds of other artists – in his live show for over 10 years, without complaint.”
