Country singer Eric Church has slammed the NRA for not doing enough to prevent mass shootings in the U.S.
"There are some things we can’t stop," Church told Rolling Stone, ”like the disgruntled kid who takes his dad’s shotgun and walks into a high school. But we could have stopped the guy in Vegas.”
He’s referring to the gunman who opened fire at fans at the Route 91 Harvest Festival last October from his room at a nearby hotel. At least 58 people were killed and hundreds were injured.
“Nobody should have that many guns and that much ammunition and we don’t know about it,” said Church. “Nobody should have 21 AKs and 10,000 rounds of ammunition and we don’t know who they are.”
The singer, who performed at the festival two nights before the massacre, said he supports gun law reforms to ban bump stocks and enhance background checks.
“I’m a Second Amendment guy,” he said, admitting that he owns several guns. “That’s in the Constitution, it’s people’s right, and I don’t believe it’s negotiable.”
But, Church said, the NRA has too much power over politicians.
He also admitted the Route 91 massacre has left him shaken. “Something broke in me that night,” said Church, “and it still hasn't healed.”
