A Rolling Stones fan claims she was duped by a fake Ronnie Wood who tried to take thousands of dollars from her.
Mary Downey told Page Six she left a birthday message on the Stones guitarist’s Facebook page in June and received a reply from a different account – which she believed also belonged to Wood – asking her to send a private message.
Downey exchanged messages with the alleged rock star. “It was romantic, but it never got sexual,” she said of their online relationship. “It was [him saying] how much he loves me.”
The bogus Wood told Downey he was divorcing Sally Humphreys and moving to Miami but needed $8,400 U.S. for real estate fees and didn’t want to go through his bank because he feared it would tip off the press.
Downey said she suspected something was fishy when he pushed her for banking details. She said she reported the scam to the FBI but was told it could not investigate because no funds ever changed hands.
