Pop star Fergie and actor Josh Duhamel have been estranged since spring, it was revealed Thursday.

In a statement, the celebrity couple confirmed they separated earlier this year "with absolutely love and respect."

The pair added: "To give our family the best opportunity to adjust, we wanted to keep this a private matter before sharing it with the public. We are and will always be united in our support of each other and our family."

It was the first marriage for both Fergie, 42, and Duhamel, 44, who have a 4-year-old son, Axl.

They began dating in 2004 after her group Black Eyed Peas did a cameo on his series Las Vegas. They were engaged three years later and married in 2009.

Fergie has been focused on promoting her new album Double Dutchess, which comes out Sept. 22. She was also in Toronto recently to tape a guest appearance on CTV's new music competition series The Launch.

Duhamel spent most of the summer in Vancouver directing and starring in the movie The Buddy Games.

On her new song "Life Goes On," Fergie sings: "Life goes on, with or without you / It's up to you what you're gonna do / You could go or you could stay / But who cares anyway?"
