The Woodstock 50 festival, set for Aug. 16 to 18 in Watkins Glen, NY, has been cancelled, its funders said Monday.
“We don’t believe the production of the festival can be executed as an event worthy of the Woodstock Brand name,” read a statement, “while also ensuring the health and safety of the artists, partners and attendees.
“As a result and after careful consideration, Dentsu Aegis Network’s Amplifi Live, a partner of Woodstock 50, has decided to cancel the festival. As difficult as it is, we believe this is the most prudent decision for all parties involved.”
But, promoter Michael Lang told The New York Times that Dentsu “do not have the right to unilaterally cancel the festival." In a statement, organizers said “Woodstock 50 vehemently denies the festival’s cancellation and legal remedy will (be) sought."
Speculation that there was trouble with the festival came when tickets didn't go on sale as scheduled on April 22.
The festival was going to be headlined by The Killers, Dead and Co., Imagine Dragons and Jay-Z and was to feature a diverse line-up of acts that includedMiley Cyrus, Chance the Rapper and Halsey.
Original Woodstock performers John Fogerty, John Sebastian, David Crosby, Canned Heat and Country Joe McDonald were scheduled to attend.
