Bobby Lee hasn’t slowed down since he found out in May that his TV series Splitting Up Together, starring Oliver Hudson and Jenna Fischer, was cancelled after two seasons.
“I don't really take it personally and I also don't stress about it because I've always found my way,” the 47-year-old actor and comedian told iHeartRadio.ca on Thursday. “I'm always working.”
Known for his work on MADtv and in movies like Pineapple Express and the Toronto-shot Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, Lee hosts the popular TigerBelly podcast – available on the iHeartRadio app – with his girlfriend of six years, Khalyla Kuhn.
He is currently at the Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal to host The Nasty Show, where he is free to talk about anything on a nightly basis.
“It’s in my wheelhouse,” Lee pointed out. “I also asked who else is on it, and the right people are on it… people I know. It just completely makes sense for me.”
The show, running until July 27, features Big Jay Oakerson, Andrew Schulz, Jessimae Peluso, Comedian CP and Bonnie McFarlane.
The gig marks Lee’s debut at the festival. “I’ve never been to Montreal before,” he said, although he has performed in several other Canadian cities over the years. “I love Canadians so much. You guys are non-threatening – although you do have some crazy people up here.”
After his run at Just For Laughs, Lee will head to Hawaii to guest star on season 2 of Magnum P.I., the reboot from Montreal native Peter Lenkov that airs on CTV.
“They wrote me a two-episode arc,” he said, enthusiastically. “So I'm going to do that and then we'll just see what happens.”
Lee counts Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis among his friends; has welcomed Interpol singer Paul Banks to TigerBelly; and has appeared in music videos like Eminem's "We Made You" and Taio Cruz's "Hangover" – but his current playlist is decidedly more retro.
“I've been really getting into older stuff,” he said. “I like Roxy Music a lot, Bryan Ferry. Velvet Underground, Joy Division.”
