Is KISS planning to perform in Antarctica?
Gene Simmons said this week the band plans to do a concert at the “coldest place on Earth.” He told Los Angeles radio station 95.5 KLOS: “If you can imagine us playing there with even larger pyro than you’ve ever seen, ‘cause there’s nothing around there. But that’s all I’ll say about it.”
Though Simmons did not name Antarctica, it is the coldest place on the planet. KISS is scheduled to play Buenos Aires, Argentina on Oct. 23, 2021 and most voyages to Antarctica begin in Ushuaia, Argentina, a three-and-a-half-hour flight away.
In October, low temperatures in Antarctica range between a relatively mild -23°C and -16°C.
Metallica was the first band to perform on the icy continent when they did a 10-song set for scientists at Carlini Station in 2013.
KISS is scheduled to resume its End of the Road World Tour on June 2, 2021 in Belgium. Simmons said the band is optimistic it will go on as planned.
"The vaccines are gonna be out there for everybody, oh, by January, February, March at the latest,” he said. “Most of the shows have already sold out.”
Simmons said he and his Canadian wife Shannon Tweed spent most of the pandemic at their home in Whistler, B.C.
KISS will blast into 2021 with a huge outdoor concert on New Year's Eve in Dubai that will be livestreamed. "It's a nice way to just forget about your troubles and just celebrate life," said Simmons. "We just want to celebrate and remind everybiody that it's going to get better. It really is. We want to bring in the New Year with a bang – the biggest bang you've ever seen."
