A team led by Grammy winner Carvin Winans won $10,000 on Family Feud Canada.
The 62-year-old gospel star, a member of Detroit quartet The Winans, appeared on episodes of the game show with his wife Chérie, their daughter Shanniah and his in-laws Shanelle and Susan.
On the episode that aired Wednesday, the family made it to the final “Fast Money” round and won the $10,000 prize. They returned for a second game, which aired Thursday, but lost and were eliminated from the show.
Family Feud Canada teams can compete on up to three episodes for a chance to win a maximum of $30,000.
Host Gerry Dee appeared not to know he was talking to one-quarter of The Winans, who recorded nine albums between 1981 and 1995, had several singles on the U.S. R&B chart and collected five Grammy Awards from 12 nominations. Last year, Winans released a solo album, In The Softest Way, that includes tracks featuring Stevie Wonder and Kenny G.
Winans, who sang backing vocals on Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror,” also penned Regina Bell’s 1990 hit “Make It Like It Was."
“You’re a hall-of-famer I hear,” Dee said. “Tell me about that.” Winans explained that The Winans were inducted into the Gospel Hall of Fame in 2009 (it was actually in 2007). Later, Dee asked: “So, you’re from Michigan?”
Winans, who is also the brother of CeCe Winans – the most successful gospel artist of all time – told Dee about meeting Chérie more than 16 years ago.
“I was here performing in Toronto and I saw her in the lobby and it was love at first sight,” he recalled. “I didn’t even believe in that until I saw her.”
Chérie added: “He wanted me to come to Detroit but I said, ‘No you’ve got to come to Toronto.’”
“And now I’m a Canadian citizen,” said Winans.
The family auditioned for Family Feud Canada in June. The episodes with the Winans-Haye family are available on CBC Gem.
Earlier this year, Winans son Juan (from his first marriage to Debra) competed on the U.S. show Songland, where he and wife Lisa pitched a ballad titled "Maybe."
