Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson and more stars performed in “Hairspray Live” on Wednesday.
As Gossip Cop has reported, “Hairspray Live” is a one-time-only production airing on NBC. The show is based on the original 1988 John Waters film of the same name, which was then turned into a Tony-winning Broadway musical in 2002. That in turn was adapted for a musical movie remake in 2007.
Now this new adaptation is combining songs from both the stage show and the film reboot in one star-studded production. As record shop owner Motormouth Maybelle, Hudson has two big numbers: “Big, Blonde and Beautiful” and the moving “I Know Where I’ve Been.” Grande, meanwhile, gets to sing as her character Penny in “Mama, I’m A Big Girl Now,” “Without Love,” and the musical’s signature song, “You Can’t Stop The Beat.”
But that’s not all. Hudson and Grande also have a duet called “Come So Far (Got So Far To Go).” As the conniving Velma, Kristin Chenoweth shows off her pipes with “Miss Baltimore Crabs,” Derek Hough does his best TV host impression with “The Nicest Kids In Town,” and even Martin Short flaunts his vocal chops with “Timeless To Me.”
That’s in addition to lead cast members Maddie Baillio and Harvey Fierstein singing some of the musical’s most beloved tracks, like “Good Morning Baltimore” and “Welcome To The 60s.” Check out the highlights below!
