Actor/comedian Harry Shearer is revisiting Spinal Tap in the form of a solo album, written and recorded as the band's bassist/his alter ego Derek Smalls.
Shearer revealed his plans for the EP during a recent profile in GQ. He says the record is tentatively titled Smalls Change; it deals with partying hard into your 70s and all the complications that come with it.
The GQ feature deals mostly with Shearer and his Spinal Tap co-creators' legal battle over allegedly unpaid royalties. You can read it here.
Shearer describs the Spinal Tap creative process with Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Rob Reiner as "sitting around laughing."
And that process is apparently still at work, since Shearer was inspired enough to resurrect his character from the 1984 comedy. The album also features guest performances by Donald Fagen of Steely Dan, Peter Frampton and Steve Vai.
Shearer plans to tour in support of the album.
