As the world grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, a certain Irish band is hoping its name won’t scare fans off.
“Who knows what effect this will have,” singer Danny O’Reilly of The Coronas told NME.
“It’s unfortunate for us that we have such an unfortunate band name.”
Coronaviruses cause respiratory tract infections in mammals and birds – including some cases of the common cold – but the word “coronavirus” has been thrust into the spotlight by coverage of COVID-19, which is caused by a coronavirus known as SARS-CoV-2.
O’Reilly said his band is “99 percent sure” it will have to cancel a North American tour that includes shows on April 26 at Vancouver’s Commodore Ballroom and April 30 at Toronto’s Mod Club Theatre.
Still, he is looking at the lighter side of the situation. “Someone mentioned that maybe we should do a co-headline tour with The Vaccines,” O'Reilly joked.
