Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds proposed to Aja Volkman on Christmas – nearly two years after announcing the end of their marriage.
“I could see that he was nervous but I didn’t know why,” she shared in an Instagram post. "He got on one knee and before he could open his mouth I began to cry.”
In April 2018, Reynolds tweeted: “After 7 beautiful years together, Aja and I's marriage has come to an end. Our children continue to be the most important thing in our lives, & we will continue to co-parent them with all our love. I ask that you please respect our privacy at this time as we work through this as a family.”
In her post this week, Volkman reflected on their marriage and shared the reasons why they failed to keep it going. She also revealed how they came back together only seven months after splitting.
“One evening he came to my door. I looked at him timidly because of all that I had gone through. Endless days of hiding in my closet crying beneath my clothes. Deep soul searching accompanied by the darkest thoughts that would eventually turn to light,” she recalled.
“He stood there on my porch and all I could see was my most favourite person staring back at me. I understood it all. We didn’t need the words. We were both forgiven..but... I wouldn’t put my ring back on. Even when we decided to stay together. I just couldn’t go back to what we were. I told him that we would have to start again. He agreed.”
The couple, who had daughters Arrows, Gia and Coco prior to separating, welcomed son Valentine in October.
Volkman said when Reynolds re-proposed, she knew what to say. “The answer has always been yes,” she wrote. “Even before we knew what that meant.”
The pair met when an up-and-coming Imagine Dragons opened for Volkman's band Nico Vega. "I was kind of at a place in my life where I thought, 'This guy is so cute, but I’m not really interested in meeting anybody right now.' But we really just fell in love, and about a year later we ended up getting married and then we had a baby," she told Las Vegas Weekly in 2013.
