One Direction fans are becoming more excited about the possibility that a reunion is going to happen.
July marks the 10th anniversary of the wildly successful group, which disbanded in 2016.
Last week, Liam Payne told The Sun he and Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan have been talking to each other about marking the occasion somehow.
“There's a number of different things that we are all working on to try and make happen and people are forwarding emails around,” he said. “At the moment I'm not sure what I'm allowed to say.”
Social media was abuzz after fans noticed that Styles, Payne, Tomlinson and Horan were once again following both Zayn Malik (who quit the group in early 2015) and the official One Direction account on Twitter.
The reunion is expected be in the form of a TV special of some kind. New music is unlikely and a tour is out of the question.
Indeed, none of the former 1D members have ruled out getting back together at some point.
"We'd be absolutely ridiculous not to reform the band,” Horan told RTE recently. “We haven’t really spoken about the ‘when's' but we do know we will. We have all said individually that we will and I think it would be stupid if we didn’t.”
Last March, Tomlinson told The Sun a reunion is “no brainer.” He added: “Honestly I'll be the first name on the team sheet, I'll be signing it straight away I tell you. You feel like we’ve got a responsibility actually to come back to these people.”
Simon Cowell, who put the group together, told a British radio station last November: “My gut feeling is … yeah, I do think it will happen. It would be nuts not to. Even if it was a one-off event or something, it’s just too big of an opportunity not to do.”
Of course, physical distancing during the COVID-19 crisis complicates any plans to get back together. Styles was recently asked if a reunion via Zoom is being considered.
"I don’t know if that’s the reunion that we’ve had in mind,” he replied. “I don’t know if that’s how… if that would be the way to do it but I’ll have a quick whip round.”
