James Corden insists he almost always drives the vehicle in the popular Carpool Karaoke segments that air on The Late Late Show.
“Ninety-five percent of the time I really am endangering the lives of the world’s biggest pop stars,” the host said.
A video clip that went viral this month showed a SUV with Corden and Justin Bieber being pulled by a production vehicle. Zoli Honig captioned it: “This is why I have trust issues – he isn’t even driving!”

Corden said the recent Carpool Karaoke with Bieber – the pop star’s third appearance – was one of only five that were shot in a vehicle that was being pulled. (Meghan Trainor, Migos, Cardi B and Chance The Rapper were the others.)
“I hate to be the bearer of even more bad news, but while we’re getting things out in the open, I don’t actually need them to help me get to work, right? Often I’m at work already,” Corden added. “We’ve also never once, in the history of doing that bit, ever used the carpool lane. There’s not even a carpool lane on my way to work and I just thought that we all knew this.”
Corden pointed out not everything on television is real.
“I’m sorry that you were so deep into the reality of Carpool Karaoke but it’s TV,” he said, “and sometimes we do stuff just for the sake of entertainment.”
Corden’s most recent passenger had a little fun at his expense. Bieber tweeted: “Wait… you weren’t driving the car? How could you James? I’m shocked.”
