Janet Jackson took control of the Mnet Asian Music Awards on Friday in Hong Kong, where she spoke about a world in which women are “no longer controlled, manipulated, or abused.”
The 52-year-old pop superstar gave a powerful acceptance speech after being introduced by BTS as recipient of the Worldwide Inspiration Award.
“I’m very excited and honoured by this wonderful award,” Jackson (who was just announced as an inductee in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) said. “I’m deeply humbled by the idea that I’ve inspired others.
“I dream of the end of bigotry and discrimination in any form. I dream of a world in which we join hands across all borders and unite as one. Finally, I dream of a planet where hatred turns to compassion, tolerance turns to understanding, and a healing and lasting peace prevails.”
On social media, Jackson shared video of her meeting the members of BTS backstage – and sharing some of her wisdom with the young pop stars. “Are you guys having fun with it? Enjoying it?,” she asked the guys. “Make sure you do.”
