The Red Hot Chili Peppers announced Sunday the band is welcoming John Frusciante back for a third time.
The 49-year-old guitarist’s return means the Peppers are “parting ways” with Josh Klinghoffer after a decade, according to a message shared on social media.
“Josh is a beautiful musician who we respect and love,” it read. “We are deeply grateful for our time with him, and the countless gifts he shared with us.”
Frusciante joined the Peppers in 1988 after the death of founding member Hillel Slovak but quit in 1992. He rejoined in 1998 and quit again in 2009. He reunited with Anthoyn Kiedis and Flea for a benefit show in 2016.
Klinghoffer replaced Frusciante in 2009 and recorded two studio albums – 2011’s I’m with You and 2016’s The Getaway – with the band. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Peppers in 2012.
Klinghoffer released his debut solo album last month.
