If you're wondering whether or not John Mayer's new album, The Search for Everything, will include material inspired by his breakup with Katy Perry, the obvious answer is yes.
Speaking with The New York Times, the pop singer/songwriter said that his new single, "Still Feel Like Your Man," is particularly about his former flame. "Who else would I be thinking about?" he asked. "And by the way, it's a testament to the fact that I have not dated a lot of people in the last five, six years. That was my only relationship. So it's like, give me this, people."
Mayer and Perry had an on and off relationship, which started in 2012 and eventually fizzled in 2015, so it only makes sense that the LP is a statement to his emotional headspace post-Perry. Nonetheless, confirmation is always nice.
In a previous interview with Rolling Stone, the 39-year-old star explained that the studio effort serves as the first time he actually put his true emotions on the line. "I actually, for the first time in my life, believe I recorded exactly what I was feeling," he confessed of the heartbreak he experienced following his split with the pop titan. "It was the only time in my life that sadness was like a lucid dream, like, 'Oh, I'm here. I got no business trying to get out of this, because it won't work.' It was like learning to live in the wilderness."
Speaking of writing about famous exes, it's heavily rumored that Mayer wrote his 2002 hit "Your Body is a Wonderland" about Jennifer Love Hewitt and "Paper Doll" in response to Taylor Swift's own "Dear John."
The Search for Everything drops on April 14.
