Johnny Orlando woke up Sunday to news that he is the winner of Best Canadian Act at the 2019 MTV Europe Music Awards.
The 16-year-old Ontario pop singer, who will appear on the show, beat Shawn Mendes by earning the most fan votes. He was also up against Alessia Cara, Carly Rae Jepsen and Avril Lavigne. This was Orlando’s first nomination at the MTV EMAs.
Mendes won the category in each of the last three years. Justin Bieber was chosen the winner in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Also announced ahead of Sunday’s MTV EMAs in Seville, Spain was Taylor Swift as the winner of this year’s Best U.S. Act, besting Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X, Lizzo and Ariana Grande. She last won the category in 2015.
Little Mix topped nominees like Lewis Capaldi and Ed Sheeran to win Best UK Act for the fourth time in five years.

Mendes is up for Best Artist, Best Pop and Biggest Fans as well as both Best Song and Best Collaboration for his Camila Cabello duet “Señorita.” He has won 10 MTV EMAs since 2015.
