Journey's 1981 hit "Don't Stop Believin'" has been officially named the biggest song of all time.
According to the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), the song has now sold 18 million units, between pure sales and streaming in the U.S. alone.
Okay, so technically it is tied with Post Malone and Swae Lee’s 2018 hit “Sunflower" from Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, however, considering its history and ubiquitous revival after appearing in the series finale of The Sopranos, Journey wins the tiebreaker.
Forbes adds that not far behind are Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” which sits at 17-times platinum, then Drake’s “God’s Plan,” Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud,” and Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive,” which have all been certified 16-times platinum.
Journey's former frontman Steve Perry, who sang vocals on "Don't Stop Believin'" posted about his song's achievement on socials, saying, "When this 'Don’t Stop Believin’' The Biggest Song of ALL Time” article came out yesterday I was so emotionally stunned. To be part of such a moment as this made me reflect on my parents. By that I mean, though I lost them both years ago, I was so happy for them because they are truly the reason this is happening. My dad was a singer and both of them were very musical. So on behalf of my Mom and Dad, I thank every one of you for so many years of support."
