Justin Bieber has offered new details about his past drug abuse, which included ecstasy, magic mushrooms, pills and lean (or purple drank).
In the latest episode of his YouTube series Seasons, the 25-year-old Canadian singer said he started smoking marijuana in Stratford, Ont. when was just 12 or 13 and moved on to more serious substances.
“People don’t know how serious it got. It was legit crazy scary,” Bieber recalled. “I was waking up in the morning and the first thing I was doing was popping pills and smoking a blunt and starting my day. It just got scary.
“I decided to stop because I was, like, dying. My security and stuff would come into my room at night to check my pulse.”
In a 2018 interview, Bieber’s manager Scott “Scooter” Braun admitted he feared the pop star was going to die.
“I thought he was going to sleep one night and that he would have so much crap in his system that he would not wake up the next morning,” Braun said on The Red Pill podcast. “I was worried every night that I was gonna lose him.”
In Seasons, Bieber said he used drugs as an escape from the pressures of his growing fame – and the adults in his life looked the other way.
“I had a lot of money and a lot of things, so then you have all these people around me hanging on and wanting stuff from me, knowing I was living this lifestyle that they also wanted to live,” he said.
Last September, Bieber addressed his past behaviour in an Instagram post. “I started doing pretty heavy drugs at 19 and abused all of my relationships,” he confessed. “I became resentful, disrespectful to women, and angry. I became distant to everyone who loved me, and I was hiding behind a shell of a person that I had become.”
