Singer-songwriter Justin Townes Earle, the son of Steve Earle, died Sunday at 38.
“It is with tremendous sadness that we inform you of the passing of our son, husband, father and friend Justin,” read a statement on his official Facebook page. “So many of you have relied on his music and lyrics over the years and we hope that his music will continue to guide you on your journeys.
“You will be missed dearly Justin.”
A cause of death was not immediately disclosed. Earle battled drug addiction for most of his life.
“I’m saddened to hear that we have lost Justin Townes Earle and at such a young age,” tweeted Billy Bragg. “I worked with him last year and found him to be a brilliant songwriter and generous soul.”
Frank Turner said Earle “was a week younger than me but always felt like an older soul. A kind guy and a wonderful songwriter.”
“Had a lot of good times and made a lot of good music with JTE,” tweeted Jason Isbell. “So sad for his family tonight.”
Earle played in Nashville bands the Distributors and the Swindlers and toured in his father’s band, the Dukes. He released the EP Yuma in 2007 and went on to record eight albums, including last year’s The Saint of Lost Causes.
He leaves behind wife Jenn Marie and their 3-year-old daughter Etta.
