Katy Perry is set to receive the Video Vanguard Award at next month's 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on September 11.
The 39-year-old singer will also perform at the event alongside Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Camila Cabello, Rauw Alejandro, GloRilla and more.
Previous recipients of the Video Vanguard include Rihanna, Beyoncé, U2 P!nk, Kanye West, Jennifer Lopez, Missy Elliott, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nick Minaj and Shakira, who was awarded the honour last year.
Previously known as the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, the Video Vanguard is a lifetime achievement award given to recording artists and music video directors who have made an outstanding contribution to popular music.
“Katy is a musical powerhouse and true pop culture icon,” said Bruce Gillmer, chief content officer of music at Paramount+ and president of music, music talent, programming and events at Paramount. “With her game changing creative vision, she has become a global phenomenon and taken over the world’s biggest stages.”
Timing for the award couldn't come at a better time for Perry, who has faced a lot of scrutiny over the rollout of her upcoming album, 143. From the lukewarm reception and chart-bombing result of her first single, the pseudo-feminist "Woman's World" to the recent claims she did not obtain proper authorization to film her latest video for "Lifetimes" on protected sand dunes in Spain's Balearic Islands, times have been rough for Perry of late.
And while her two most recent videos are far from classics, the five-time VMA winner has more than her share of iconic videos, including "Firework," which took home Video of the Year in 2011.
Taylor Swift leads all 2024 VMA nominees with ten, including eight alone for “Fortnight," featuring Post Malone.
The 2024 MTV VMAs will happen live on September 11 at 8:00PM EST from the UBS Arena in Elmont, NY.
