Kelly Clarkson is revving up to release her new album, and according to a new interview with the “Heartbeat Song” singer, it’s got a whole lot of attitude.
The singer, 35, spoke at a Music Biz Conference on Tuesday (May 16). Describing her new record, she said, “It’s got a lot of sass — like I might beat you up with my sound.” The album will be a mix of “urban, pop, soulful R&B.”
Clarkson also may have been holding out in her previous tunes. “My backup singers who’ve worked with me for years said ‘It’s the first time you’ve done a record that’s, like, full-on your personality.’”
“I’ve always been a confident person, I think that’s just being Texan,” Clarkson continued. “But I think being a mom has brought another level of confidence, because basically the things a mom does daily, without adding a job, is pretty insane. We’re gladiators, basically.”
It’s not just Kelly who says the as-yet untitled album has sass. Atlantic Records co-chairman/COO Julie Greenwald agrees, explaining that when she heard it, “it was like she kicked through the door. We all know Kelly has this big voice. But these songs have so much attitude. She’s not walking through the door, she’s kicking it the f*** open.”
The singer has been confirmed as a judge for the upcoming season of The Voice after rumours swirled she would be rejoining ABC’s reboot of American Idol. The upcoming album is due out for release later this year.
