The cardigan Kurt Cobain wore during the taping of Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged session sold over the weekend for $334,000 (all figures U.S.).
The unwashed sweater with a cigarette burn mark and a missing button was purchased by an anonymous bidder during a Julien’s auction at the Hard Rock Café in New York City.
The auction house had expected it to fetch $300,000.
Cobain died by suicide on April 5, 1994, less than six months after taping MTV Unplugged. The singer’s widow, Courtney Love, gifted the cardigan to a nanny after Cobain’s death. It was then purchased in 2015 for $137,500.
At the same auction, Cobain’s left-handed Fender Mustang guitar sold for $340,000, slightly less than predicted.
