In a heartbreaking new interview, Lil Nas X has revealed that he used to try to pray the gay away.
“I would just, like, you know, pray, pray, and pray,” he told CBS This Morning. “That it was, like, a phase … yeah, it would go away.”
The 20-year-old “Old Town Road” rapper, who came out publicly in June, said he hopes talking about his experience will help others struggling with their sexuality.
“I mean, ‘cause me being in this position, like, it's easy for me. But, like, some little boy 10 miles from here, it's not gonna be good for him.
“We still have a long way to go.”
Lil Nas X said his coming out means a boy listening to his music is likely to get teased. “There's still a lot to be done, of course,” he said. “But I do believe it's helping.”
During the segment, the rapper returns to his Atlanta high school to surprise students. “It feels good to walk through the halls and not get in trouble for it,” he joked.
The full interview airs Oct. 1.
Lil Nas X announced on Twitter last week that he is scrapping two upcoming appearances. “It’s been a wild last 7 months and im ready to take a little time off,” he explained. “i love u guys and will make it up to you some way.”
