Alec Benjamin released the emotional new song “Mind Is A Prison” on Thursday.
“I’m a prisoner / a visitor inside of my brain,” the 25-year-old sings. “And no matter what I do they try to keep me in chains ... Alone with my thoughts again / I guess my mind is a prison and I’m never gonna get out.”
The track follows the release this summer of “Jesus In L.A.” and “Must Have Been the Wind,” his first new music since his EP Narrated For You.
In April, Benjamin told iHeartRadio.ca about the emotional toll his busy touring life has taken.
“I’m the kind of person that needs a schedule and I’m struggling,” he explained. “I’m depressed because I’m not exercising or eating healthy, and so that has an effect on me emotionally.”
Benjamin said he’s grown to love being a songwriter.
“I just put a lot of pressure on myself and I’m very focused on the outcome so sometimes I spend a day writing a song and if it’s not good then I’m like ‘that was a waste.’ It’s hard to live my life like that,” he said. “I try not to put too much of a filter on myself. Usually whatever comes out naturally is probably the right thing because… I try not to think about it.
“Ultimately if it’s something that my friends or fans or family really like, I’ll just put it out.”
