Avril Lavigne surfaced Wednesday with a brand new song, “Head Above Water.”
The 33-year-old Canadian singer co-wrote the track with Travis Clark and Canadian songwriter-producer Stephan Moccio. She has said it was inspired by her battle with Lyme Disease.
“One night, I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die. My mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning,” Lavigne wrote in an open letter to fans recently.
“Under my breath, I prayed, ‘God, please help to keep my head above the water.’ In that moment, the song writing of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on.”
Back in March, Lavigne shared: “I’ve been faced with a lot, gone through a lot emotionally. The whole writing process has been therapeutic and empowering.
“This album is a natural process for me and it’s coming from a very honest place. My hope is that it is an inspiration to many people.”
She has not yet shared a release date for the album. Lavigne has not put out a collection of new music since her self-titled fifth studio album in 2013 and “Head Above Water” is the first new single since the 2015 charity release “Fly.”
