Gorillaz have chosen the perfect time to return with politically-charged new music. Their first song in six years, the band based on virtual characters has collaborated with singer-songwriter Benjamin Clementine to release “Hallelujah Money”.
The music video for “Hallelujah Money” comes on the eve of Donald Trump’s Presidential inauguration, and takes the President-Elect to task for his much-publicized business conflicts and divisive rhetoric.
Mercury Prize-winning Clementine is shown standing in Trump Tower and climbing into a gold-plated elevator followed by frontman Damon Albarn singing, “When the morning comes, we are still human/How will we know? How will we dream? How will we love?”
An accompanying tweet from Gorillaz announcing the video read: “Dark time – u need someone to look up to … Here’s a lightning bolt of truth in a black night. Now piss on! New stuff won’t write itself.”
The tweet also suggests the band are hard at work writing new music, which has been confirmed for a 2017 release.
