There is a global pandemic, the economy is in shambles – and it’s Friday the 13th. So, of course, we have a new mix of Avenue Beat’s “F2020” featuring Canada’s Jessie Reyez.
“I feel like this year acted as an equalizer for a lot of different people. When I heard ‘F2020’, it felt like hearing the state of humanity sing for a few minutes,” Reyez said, in a release.
“Avenue Beat created a song where it feels like the world is collectively holding the microphone. I was inspired, I reached out, the rest is history.”
The Nashville-based trio’s “Lowkey F**k 2020” video became a TikTok hit and led to a full song, which debuted in July.
“Jessie is a ground-breaking badass human and we are obsessed with her vision and how she sees the world,” Avenue Beat – Sami Bearden, Savana Santos and Sam Backoff – said, in a release. "She’s always writing super introspective music!! She’s always on that real s**t and we respect the hell out of her for it!
“To have Jessie on this version of the track is everything. She brought such a unique perspective to the song. We are both talking about how 2020 halted our careers but Jessie’s spin on how it put some relief into her life is so interesting.”
Reyez contributed a verse in which she reflects: “On tour with Billie / Sharing the same stage / Figures I’d finally make it / just to find I hate fame / So when 2020 hit and put a pause up on my s**t / I was smiling while the world was crying out for mayday.”
She sings about how she “started losing family” and hasn’t been able to see her brother’s children since the pandemic hit.
