Maren Morris on Thursday gifted fans with “Girl,” a powerful anthem inspired by a letter she wrote to another woman.
Morris partnered with Sarah Aarons, who co-wrote “The Middle” (her collaboration with Zedd and Grey), and pop producer Greg Kurstin for the track. It’s a preview of what to expect on her forthcoming sophomore album.
“Girl don’t you hang your head low / Don’t you lose your halo,” the country star sings. “Everyone’s going to be okay, baby.”
Morris told Rolling Stone about the origins of the song. “I was writing it as a letter to another girl who I felt had disrespected me and was constantly trying to be competitive with me when I just wanted to exist in my own space,” she explained.
“But as we kept writing it, I realized I’m not talking to someone else — I’m talking to myself.”
Morris will kick off a world tour (that doesn't include any Canadians date) in March.
