Matt Stell, the country singer with the breakthrough hit “Prayed for You," has released his take on Ariana Grande’s smash “God is a Woman.”
The 35-year-old Arkansas native said he was “floored” when he first heard Grande’s song, which the pop star penned with Ilya Salmanzadeh, Max Martin, Savan Kotecha and Rickard Göransson.
“It’s such a well written song,” said Stell, in a release. “The title is very provocative, but the lyric takes the song in a slightly different direction that really makes an impact.
“It explores the tension between sexuality and spirituality in a fresh way. To me the strength of this song comes from its unapologetic sexuality. It’s all the more potent because it’s from a woman’s point of view.”
Stell believes the song is a natural for a country cover. "If Conway Twitty were around I could definitely hear him doing this song,” he said. “A lot of my favourite music in all genres and all eras pushes boundaries. This song does that and I had a ball reimagining it.”
“God is a Woman” was featured on Grande’s 2018 album Sweetener.
