Port Cities, best known for 2018’s “Montreal,” is back with a new song, “I Still See You At Parties.”
The Halifax-based duo of Dylan Guthro and Carleton Stone – founding member Breagh MacKinnon left last year – have enlisted Emma-Lee to sing on the track.
Co-written by Guthro and Stone, it’s about the pain of running into a lover you haven’t yet gotten over.
“I still see you at parties / ‘cause we got all the same friends,” they sing. “I still see you at parties / but we ain’t tryna to be friends.”
Both artists came from musical backgrounds and had released acclaimed recordings of their own when they got together in 2015, a few years after meeting at a songwriters camp.
“After awhile we were like, we’re all fighting for the same gigs, why don’t we start one band and start writing songs specifically for that,” Stone told iHeartRadio.ca last year.
Guthro, whose father is famed singer-songwriter Bruce Guthro, said there was another advantage. “Traveling and hanging out alone definitely sucks,” he admitted. “To be on the road with your best buddies all the time and share some of the singing duties and other duties… It’s probably the biggest difference for me, where it’s just like you don’t feel alone anymore, you don’t have to worry about stuff on your own.”
Port Cities released its self-titled debut album in 2017. Not included in the collection was “Montreal,” which became a radio hit.
“I remember going home to Cape Breton,” recalled Stone. “That’s the first place I heard ‘Montreal’ and I cranked it up.”
