After teasing Selenators all week, Selena Gomez's new single "Bad Liar" is finally here! Other than her recent collaboration with Kygo ("It Ain't Me"), and her "Only You" cover for the 13 Reasons Why soundtrack, this is Selena's first new material since her 2015 album Revival.
"Bad Liar" is a bit different from Selena's previous two albums, which contain more upbeat dance rhythms and ballads. Her new single is simple with a repetitive bass line underneath minor additional percussion, and the occasional bell sound. She sings in the song, "All my feelings on fire/Guess I’m a bad liar."
Selena's "Bad Liar" was written by Justin Tranter, her pal Julia Michaels, Ian Kirkpatrick, David Byrne, and Selena herself. The song contains a sample of Talking Heads' 1977 hit song "Psycho Killer," recorded by the band for their debut album Talking Heads: 77. That song was included on The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list.
In fact, this week Selena's fans found a video of the singer listening to Talking Heads back in 2014. In the video, she says, "Miami playing Talking Heads, that seems to be fate."
The day before Selena released "Bad Liar," she shared an image – photographed by Petra Collins – of herself laying down, looking somberly into the camera with little to no makeup on (see below). In the photo, she is wearing a bandage on her arm along with a hospital bracelet that says "RISK."
"Bad Liar" is also Selena's first original solo single since spending time in rehab to undergo treatment for effects of her lupus.
